THE GOVERNMENT VOWS STRICT ACTION AGAINST ANYONE ATTEMPTING TO RETURN TO ILLEGAL SETTLEMENTS

During the clearance, officials discovered a dummy firearm and other weapons hidden in makeshift shelters beneath the bridges—highlighting the severity of criminal hideouts in these transport corridors. Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, with support from LASTMA, LAWMA, KAI, LAMATA, and the Nigeria Police Force described the demolished areas as havens for drug dealers, traffic robbers, and other miscreants who have created a menace for Lagosians and commuters.

The government vowed strict action against anyone attempting to return to these illegal settlements. The exercise is part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s urban renewal agenda aimed at creating a safer, cleaner Lagos fit for a 21st-century megacity.

Residents displaced by the demolition appealed for support, noting economic pressures for living in these shanties. Authorities also removed unauthorized garages and long-abandoned trucks turned into dens of criminal activity.
