Dr. Abdulhameed Badmus Yusuf, a University of Ilorin lecturer, has called for Religious Studies to be brought back as a core subject in Nigerian schools to help curb the alarming rise in moral decay among the youth. Speaking at a Town Hall Meeting in Ilorin organized by the National Orientation Agency and Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, he stressed that removing religious education from schools has led to increased social vices.
Dr. Yusuf reminded that Islamic Studies and Christian Religious Studies used to be compulsory across all disciplines, teaching moral values that shaped good character—values now fading. He referenced teachings from the Holy Qur’an and Bible that promote honesty, respect, and discipline.
Kwara State’s education commissioner, representing Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, urged residents to uphold the moral and cultural values that have long brought peace and harmony to the state. National Orientation Agency officials also emphasized collective action against moral decay and encouraged youths to use social media positively.
As part of ongoing efforts, 40 youths will receive training and starter packs in soap making and barbering to empower and steer them away from vices.
