The Police Command in Ondo State has launched an investigation into an arson attack that destroyed prepaid meters worth over ₦10 million at a warehouse in Okitipupa. DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the command’s spokesperson, assured the public that those responsible will be brought to justice.
The warehouse, owned by Active Achievers Nigeria Limited and located on Barracks Road, was reportedly set ablaze on Monday by unknown persons. Over 100 Active Energy Prepaid Meters were lost in the fire, and residents couldn’t salvage anything due to the intensity of the blaze. The company’s MD, Henry Akinbola-Oyinbo, described the incident as sabotage and expressed his firm belief that it was deliberately set.
Akinbola-Oyinbo also condemned the act, emphasizing that the meters are non-inflammable and could not have caught fire without intentional arson. He called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to find and prosecute the perpetrators.
The incident comes amid ongoing efforts by the Ondo State government to improve energy access through its metering scheme, and the attack is seen as an attempt to undermine these initiatives.
