The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) plunged further into chaos on Saturday as rival factions within its National Working Committee (NWC) took turns suspending each other, escalating the bitter leadership crisis.
Led by National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu and backed by Minister Nyesom Wike, one faction suspended the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, along with five other top officials, citing allegations of incompetence, financial misconduct, and disobedience to court rulings. They appointed National Vice-Chairman (North Central) Mohammed Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman.
In response, Damagum’s NWC suspended Anyanwu, the National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, and others for alleged anti-party activities. The suspensions come just after a Federal High Court stopped the party’s planned national convention, deepening internal divisions.
Opposition leader and former Ekiti Governor, Ayodele Fayose, urged the new acting chairman to restore peace and unity, calling for a fresh national convention and adherence to court judgments.
The crisis exposes deep fractures in the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections, with accusations flying and public confidence eroding as the party struggles to find steady leadership.
