Uche Odozor, President of the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Federation (NBSF), emphasized that Nigeria is ready to lead in developing baseball and softball across Africa. As the President of WBSC Africa, he stated that Nigeria’s new role presents a great opportunity to promote not just baseball and softball but also the emerging Baseball5 variant.
He described Africa as a rising hub for baseball, noting the continent produces high-quality, resilient athletes who are very fast and tough. However, he also pointed out that poor leadership has been a barrier to full development in the sport across Africa.
Odozor highlighted that baseball players are among the highest-paid athletes globally, citing Shohei Ohtani’s record-breaking deals and emphasizing that baseball is a lifestyle and a global phenomenon. He further explained that other regions like Arabia and Asia are heavily investing in baseball, and Africa has the potential to build a strong economy around it.
He revealed Nigeria’s plans to establish the African headquarters of baseball and softball, leveraging world-class facilities such as the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and the Ilorin Baseball Facility. He expressed optimism about the future of baseball and softball in Africa under Nigeria’s leadership, with a vision for the sports to thrive and create opportunities for youth development.
Odozor also shared his vision to include baseball and softball in upcoming national tournaments like the 27th Nigeria University Games, helping to popularize the sports among young athletes and foster a new generation of talent.
