NIGERIA PARTNERS WITH EU AND UNESCO TO BOOST TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, through the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with the European Union (EU) and UNESCO to strengthen the country’s education system. The announcement was made during the launch of the National Project Steering Committee for the EU-UNESCO initiative in Abuja.

The project, called “Expand, Integrate and Strengthen Systems (EISS)”, focuses on building the capacity and resilience of teachers between 2024 and 2025. It supports six states across Nigeria, chosen to represent each geo-political zone: Adamawa, Bayelsa, Enugu, Katsina, Oyo, and Plateau.

Dr. Alausa thanked the EU for leading the effort and UNESCO for its ongoing support, highlighting the initiative’s alignment with Nigeria’s National Education System to equip teachers better.

EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot emphasized the importance of teacher welfare and training as key to Nigeria’s development, while UNESCO’s acting head, Dr. Jean-Paul Abiaga, stressed empowering teachers through digital skills and collaborative learning teams to foster sustainable education and help young Nigerians thrive.

The event also featured progress reports and plans to enhance the project’s impact on education nationwide.
