MINISTER OLAWANDE URGES YOUTHS TO TRADE PROTESTS FOR DIALOGUE TO DRIVE CHANGE

At the Youth National Discourse Abuja 2025, Minister of Youth Development Mr Ayodele Olawande called on Nigerian youths to move from street protests to constructive talks. Speaking on the theme “From Protest to Dialogue: Redefining Youth Engagement for National Transformation”, Olawande said protests are part of democracy, but real progress comes through dialogue.

He shared a powerful story of a young protester whose placard read, “I am not angry, but I am poor, I am hungry because no one listens to me.” This message shaped his vision, highlighting that youth protests express love for the country and a desire to be heard not hatred.

Olawande noted that for decades, the youth have been neglected by “rulers, not leaders,” especially those who lack formal education. Yet, this new administration marks a turning point with young leadership at the ministry, signaling a government ready to listen.

He emphasized empowering youth beyond token gestures, with over 869 youth initiatives in the 2025 budget, grants for start-ups, and protection from harassment. The goal: turn Nigerian youths into employers of labor, not just job seekers.

“Our ministry is building empathy-driven systems and youth desks in all states to foster direct dialogue before protests happen,” Olawande said. “When dialogue happens, anger turns to understanding, and protest becomes participation.”
