Former National Conscience Party (NCP) presidential candidate Martin Onovo has called on the Federal Government to use its full national capacity to tackle the growing insecurity crisis in Nigeria. Speaking to NAN in Lagos, Onovo stressed that decisive action and coordinated efforts are critical to restoring lasting peace across troubled regions.
Reacting to the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious killings, Onovo urged the government to focus on comprehensive security responses rather than debating the nature of violence. He highlighted that terrorism affects all Nigerians, regardless of faith, and emphasized that no one should be subjected to violence.
Onovo emphasized the need to empower and adequately resource Nigeria’s security forces, urging President Bola Tinubu to strengthen the military and intelligence agencies. He also advocated for collaborations between military and communities, improved intelligence sharing, and prosecution of terrorist sponsors to curb violence.
While reporting favorably on Nigeria’s security agencies’ capabilities, Onovo welcomed international assistance such as military aid from the U.S. as long as it respects Nigeria’s sovereignty. He also called for united moral leadership from religious communities to condemn extremism and promote national unity.
Echoing similar views, PDP chieftain Prince Laja Adeoye warned against foreign military intervention, advocating instead for military hardware support to enhance Nigeria’s existing security capacity without compromising national stability.
