JUSTICE FOR OCHANYA: FOUNDATION DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY SEVEN YEARS AFTER TRAGIC DEATH

The Kunie Foundation, based in Enugu, has reignited calls for justice for 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, who died in 2018 from complications linked to prolonged sexual abuse in Benue State. The foundation’s Communications Manager, Mr. Uchenna Igboeme, expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the slow pace of legal proceedings and ongoing impunity protecting perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence.

Ochanya, a Junior Secondary School student at Federal Government Girls College, Gboko, suffered years of abuse by relatives Victor and Andrew Ogbuja. Despite graphic evidence and her heartbreaking story, justice remains painfully delayed. The Benue State High Court acquitted Andrew Ogbuja in 2022 due to insufficient forensic evidence amid conflicting autopsy reports, while his wife—the victim’s guardian—was convicted of negligence.

Mr. Igboeme called for systemic reforms to protect vulnerable girls, enforce laws like the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, and ensure survivors and families receive dignity and justice. The foundation urges government bodies, law enforcement, civil society, and media to keep Ochanya’s story alive to prevent silence and inaction from contributing to more suffering.

“Every delayed justice silences another girl and breaks another family’s heart,” he warned, praying that Ochanya’s tragedy awakens a collective commitment to protect all Nigerian children.
