Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has sounded the alarm over what he describes as a grave threat to Nigeria’s democracy. Speaking from Doha, Qatar, where he attended a worship convention, Hashim accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating a coordinated effort to undermine opposition politics and install a one-party civilian dictatorship.
Hashim strongly condemned the recent Federal High Court ruling that stopped the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national convention, calling the move a “weaponisation of the judiciary against multiparty democracy.” He highlighted internal sabotage within the PDP, accusing certain members of collaborating with APC interests to frustrate reform and weaken the party’s role as a democratic alternative.
Despite these challenges, Hashim vowed unwavering resistance from true defenders of democracy: “Those celebrating creeping dictatorship should pause. We will resist every attempt to kill opposition and pluralism.” He plans to engage key stakeholders to rally support for safeguarding democratic freedoms across Nigeria.
Hashim ended with a hopeful message urging party members to stay strong, “The darkest hour comes before dawn. A new day will break for Nigeria’s democracy.”
