Chief Olabode George, ex-Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly condemned the Federal High Court’s decision to halt the party’s national convention slated for November 15-16 in Ibadan. The judgment by Justice James Omotosho stopped the event due to the PDP’s failure to meet legal requirements, including issues with state congresses and procedural notices.
Describing the ruling as “shocking” and “dangerous” for Nigeria’s democracy, George warned it sets a harmful precedent and threatens political stability. He argued that political parties should manage their internal affairs without undue judicial interference unless there’s a clear constitutional breach.
George questioned the judge’s motive, pointing out that INEC had monitored PDP congresses without raising concerns. “Does he have political interest?” he asked. He stressed the party’s long history of following due process and called for respect of party autonomy, urging members to stay calm and pursue legal options to challenge the ruling.
The PDP is expected to appeal as it seeks to protect its internal democracy and prepare for upcoming elections.
