The Federal High Court in Abuja has put the brakes on the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) upcoming national convention, scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan, citing legal breaches. Justice James Omotosho ruled that the PDP did not follow proper protocols, including failing to hold congresses in some states and not issuing the required 21-day notices to INEC, which is mandatory for the electoral body to monitor party activities.
The judge also found that official PDP correspondence signed by the national chairman without the national secretary violates legal requirements, rendering such notices invalid. Because of these violations, INEC is restrained from recognizing or publishing any results from the convention until the party rectifies these issues.
Justice Omotosho advised the PDP to comply with all legal conditions before proceeding, emphasizing that the current convention is in jeopardy. This judgment highlights the importance of adherence to electoral laws for internal party processes.
