The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), Nigeria’s leading NGO advocating for the rights and integration of persons with disabilities, recently earned widespread commendation during its “Beneficiary Experience Sharing Forum” in Umuahia, celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Ford Foundation West Africa Office.
Beneficiaries and stakeholders lauded CCD’s impactful projects across the South-East, which have advanced disability inclusion in education, employment, healthcare, and governance. They shared how CCD’s advocacy, capacity-building, and community initiatives have increased opportunities and visibility for PWDs, transforming societal perceptions.
Prominent speakers, including Abia’s Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, and Dr. Kayode Fayemi, praised CCD’s leadership and partnership with Ford Foundation, calling it a model for social change. The event also highlighted the crucial role of public-private collaborations, ongoing reforms, and the need to include PWDs fully into Nigeria’s development.
Founded in 2002, CCD is recognized for its efforts to protect rights, promote accessibility, and empower PWDs to maximize their potential. Its initiatives include advocating for disability laws, promoting inclusive education, and supporting economic independence for persons with disabilities.
