CHAIRMAN OF NSC CALLS ON SPORTS JOURNALISTS TO PRIORITIZE TRUTH AND UNITY

At the 60th anniversary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Abuja, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko urged sports journalists to avoid sensationalism and focus on accurate reporting. He stressed that media credibility directly impacts national unity and the growth of sports in Nigeria.

Dikko reminded reporters that speed must never trump truth in today’s fast-paced news world. “If we succeed, we succeed together; if we fail, it’s together,” he said, inviting collaboration but emphasizing responsibility. He strongly condemned false reports about FIFA and CAF funds allegedly released to the NFF, calling such stories misleading and harmful to public trust.

The chairman challenged the media to build confidence through fact-based stories that inspire patriotism and support teams like the Super Eagles as they aim for World Cup qualification. SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee themed “The Power of Sports Media: Honouring Its Legacy, Shaping the Future” showcases lectures and discussions on sports journalism’s role in shaping Nigeria’s sporting landscape.

The event was attended by key figures including NIS Director-General Philip Shaibu and the Senate President’s wife, both praising SWAN’s commitment to unity through responsible reporting. The week ahead will focus on ethical journalism and evolving strategies to propel Nigerian sports forward.
