SWISS GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS BORNO MODEL FOR PEACE AND RECOVERY IN NIGERIA

The Swiss Government has pledged its support for the Borno Government’s innovative post-conflict recovery program, known as the ‘Borno Model,’ which focuses on demobilising, deradicalisation, and reintegrating repentant insurgents. This commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the new Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Patrick Egloff, to Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri.

Governor Zulum expressed heartfelt appreciation for Switzerland’s ongoing humanitarian assistance, highlighting aid during the devastating 2024 floods in Maiduguri and environs. He stressed the importance of scaling up collaboration and funding to bolster livelihood restoration and mediation efforts for victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

Zulum noted remarkable progress in stabilising security, with over 300,000 insurgents and their families surrendering in the past four years, reducing insurgency by approximately 90 percent. He described the Borno Model as a community-driven peacebuilding framework vital to sustaining peace and development.

Ambassador Egloff praised Governor Zulum’s citizen-focused leadership style and confirmed Switzerland’s readiness to partner with Borno State and stakeholders in supporting this forward-looking initiative.
