NIGERIA FACES POWER SUPPLY CHALLENGES AMID AGING INFRASTRUCTURE AND VANDALISM

The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has highlighted aging infrastructure, inadequate power generation, and vandalism as major factors behind Nigeria’s ongoing electricity supply woes. Speaking at the 2025 anniversary of the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN) in Ibadan, NEMSA’s Area Inspection Engineer, Mr. Sakariyau Babatunde, acknowledged the dilemma Nigerians face in accessing reliable electricity despite reforms.

Babatunde stressed the critical importance of electricity to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth, industrialization, and technological advancement. He called on the government and stakeholders to work collaboratively, while emphasizing LECAN’s role in ensuring safe electrical installations that reduce power fluctuations and system failures.

LECAN’s Oyo State Chairman, Mr. Sylvester Gbogi, urged the public to patronize licensed contractors only, warning against poor wiring hazards. Other stakeholders echoed the need for professionalism, continuous training, and government support to stabilize Nigeria’s power supply.
