LAGOS RESIDENTS DEMAND ACTION OVER RECKLESS BRT DRIVERS

A wave of frustration is sweeping through Lagos as residents voice outcry over the reckless, impatient, and aggressive behavior of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) drivers across the city’s major routes. Commuters and road users have reported numerous incidents of dangerous driving, intimidation, and chaos caused by these drivers, putting lives at risk daily.

Many residents have called on the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and traffic authorities to step up monitoring and enforce retraining programs for BRT drivers. They say despite the introduction of dedicated lanes, some drivers still violate traffic rules, bully smaller vehicles, and drive in ways that threaten public safety.

Commuters like Mrs. Toyin Alabi shared her horrifying experience of a recent accident caused by impatient drivers, while others like Mr. Kunle Aina described witnessing aggressive bullying tactics on the road. The situation has become so dire that pedestrians are constantly worried about crossing safely, and many have narrowly escaped accidents due to reckless driving.

Road safety advocates urge urgent action including regular training, strict discipline, and accountability for errant drivers to curb this dangerous trend. The Lagos Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) has warned against illegal use of BRT lanes and reckless behaviors and calls on the public to report misconduct by citing bus numbers.

The government’s focus must now be on enforcing road rules and ensuring that passengers and pedestrians are protected from the menace of reckless BRT drivers.
