Federal High Court judge Nkeonye Maha has sentenced 20-year-old David Abiodun to seven years in prison with hard labor for kidnapping a 17-year-old undergraduate from the University of Ibadan. The judgment was handed down after Abiodun pleaded guilty and the court considered overwhelming evidence from the prosecution.
The sentence runs concurrently with six years to be served in prison and the final year under the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where the convict will receive counseling on good conduct. Defense counsel Mr. O. Ajadi pleaded for leniency, highlighting Abiodun’s remorse, but the judge emphasized that no criminal escapes justice.
Abiodun was accused of abducting the student between May 19 and June 5, 2024, threatening to kill her if ransom demands were ignored. He collected two million naira through an Opay account from the victim’s relative. The charge falls under sections 24A and 30A of the Terrorism and Prohibition and Prevention Act 2022.
