FORMER MINISTER DR. OLU AGUNLOYE DENIES $6 BILLION FRAUD CHARGES, SUES EFCC FOR DEFAMATION

Former Power and Steel Minister Dr. Olu Agunloye has taken the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to court, accusing the agency of damaging his reputation with false claims of a $6 billion fraud. Agunloye filed a defamation suit, challenging EFCC’s social media posts that labeled him corrupt and fraudulent, seeking a public retraction, apology, and N1 billion in damages.

During court proceedings, EFCC witness ACP Umar Babangida clarified that the commission did not formally charge Agunloye with the $6 billion fraud as claimed on social media. Babangida attributed the contentious posts to EFCC’s media department, distancing himself as an investigator.

Agunloye is currently facing an amended seven-count charge linked to the controversial Mambilla hydropower project, accused of awarding contracts without budget approval and receiving illicit payments. He has pleaded not guilty.

Justice Peter Kekemeke adjourned the case until February 2, 2026, for final legal submissions.
