During the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, EFCC investigator Chinelo Eneanya testified that the bank’s naira notes redesign in 2022 led to significant economic hardship for Nigerians. She told Abuja high court that video evidence from the investigation showed widespread frustration and difficulty meeting daily needs due to the policy.
Eneanya, the seventh prosecution witness, explained that investigations revealed the redesign lacked proper approval from the CBN’s Committee of Governors or the bank’s board, and she emphasized that the process was improperly executed, causing serious disruption.
She also confirmed that the EFCC had obtained and presented documentary and video evidence, including reports from major news outlets, demonstrating the negative impact on the public’s businesses and livelihoods. The videos showed long queues, loss of income, and frustration among citizens.
Eneanya highlighted that the investigation aimed to determine whether the law on currency change was properly followed, and she confirmed that EFCC was aware of the objections to recounting certain judgments, emphasizing the importance of evidence linked directly to the case.
The trial has been adjourned to November 26, 2025, for further proceedings.
