UN WOMEN SOUNDS ALARM: FUNDING CUTS THREATEN EFFORTS TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

A new UN Women report reveals that global aid cuts are forcing one in three frontline women’s organisations to suspend or shut down crucial programmes fighting violence against women and girls. Essential services like shelters, legal aid, and healthcare support have been scaled back or closed by over 40% of these groups.

Nearly 80% of organisations report reduced access for survivors, while 59% warn that impunity and the normalization of violence against women are on the rise. Kalliopi Mingeirou, head of UN Women’s Ending Violence Against Women and Girls section, warns that these funding cuts could erase decades of progress and lead to increased violence unless governments and donors step up with flexible and protected funding.

With violence against women still one of the world’s most pervasive human rights violations affecting about 736 million women globally the report urges for sustained investment to safeguard and expand life-saving services.
