Leaders and stakeholders from the South-West Nigeria region gathered in Akure on Wednesday to urge decision-makers and authorities to prioritize the heritage and unity of the zone. The two-day Citizen-Government Engagement Summit, themed “Strengthening Democracy Through Dialogue: Assessing Progress, Charting the Future,” was organized by Afenifere and DAWN Commission, aiming to deepen democratic processes and regional development.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State emphasized that the summit was a platform for self-reflection and strategic planning to ensure the South-West remains unified and forward-looking. He praised President Tinubu’s reforms for promoting growth and prosperity, urging continuous collaboration to harness the region’s diverse strengths.
Other leaders, including Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun’s Dapo Abiodun, highlighted the region’s exemplary role in Nigeria’s progress and called for action beyond rhetoric. The summit featured discussions on fiscal reforms, economic development, infrastructure, security, and social services, with a shared goal of fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development.
Prominent figures like Pa Reuben Fasoranti and the Alaafin of Oyo urged regional unity and purposeful leadership, emphasizing that political differences should not hinder Yoruba and South-West progress. The summit signals a renewed call for cohesive regional development rooted in dialogue, respect, and shared heritage.
