PRESIDENT TINUBU RELEASES FINAL LIST OF GRANTED MERCY AND COMMUTATION OF SENTENCES

President Bola Tinubu has officially released the final list of individuals granted clemency, reduced sentences, or full pardon under the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy. The updated list, which has been carefully reviewed, now includes 86 beneficiaries, with some having their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, and others receiving full pardons.

Among those benefiting are inmates convicted of serious crimes such as murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and fraud, who have shown remorse or demonstrated positive behavior. The list also features notable names like Herbert Macaulay, Nigeria’s founding father, whose inclusion marks a symbolic move to address historical injustices.

The President emphasized that the review considers the gravity of offenses, victims’ sentiments, and national security concerns. The new list has been transmitted to the Nigerian Correctional Service for implementation, and guidelines for future exercises are being prepared to ensure transparency and fairness, including mandatory consultations with prosecuting agencies.

This move reflects President Tinubu’s broader commitment to justice reform, balancing compassion with security, and fostering social reconciliation.
