The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) announced it will begin monthly psychiatric evaluations for inmates nationwide starting November 2025. Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, NMA Vice President I, revealed this during a visit to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Controller-General in Abuja.
The initiative aims to provide inmates with crucial mental health support while promoting the dignity of female prisoners through the donation of reusable sanitary pads, supported by Nigerian company Diatom Impact/Platform Capital.
Dr. Olowojebutu highlighted the urgent need for consistent psychological care to aid inmate rehabilitation. The NCoS appreciated the partnership, noting that such collaborative efforts, including incubation centers for digital skills at correctional facilities, are vital for giving inmates a chance at meaningful reintegration.
Diatom Impact’s MD, Dr. Akintoye Akindele, stressed that prisoners deserve dignity and respect, emphasizing that rehabilitative programs help inmates become better citizens.
