NIGERIA’S NEW WILDLIFE PROTECTION BILL PASSES SENATE, SET TO STRENGTHEN CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Great news for wildlife lovers and conservationists! Nigeria’s Senate has officially passed the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill, 2024, a major step forward in combating illegal wildlife trafficking and protecting Nigeria’s rich biodiversity.

The bill, which now awaits President Bola Tinubu’s signature, updates outdated laws, introduces tougher penalties for offenders, and enhances the powers of investigators to track financial crimes and work with international partners. It also allows judges to expedite wildlife cases and recover assets, signaling Nigeria’s serious commitment to environmental preservation.

Leaders like Terseer Ugbor and organizations including Wild Africa, the Gates Foundation, and others have praised the move as a historic milestone that will curb illegal ivory and pangolin scale trafficking and restore Nigeria’s reputation as a responsible custodian of its natural heritage.

This legislation marks a turning point—making Nigeria a leader in wildlife protection across Africa and beyond. Let’s hope it gets signed into law soon!
