NIGERIA’S FLAMINGOS OUT OF FIFA U17 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP AFTER 4-0 LOSS TO ITALY

The 2022 bronze medallist Nigeria Flamingos were knocked out of the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday following a 4-0 defeat by Italy in the Round of 16 in Morocco. Italy extended their unbeaten run to four wins in four matches.

Nigeria fought hard and almost took the lead early with captain Shakirat Moshood’s fierce shot saved by Italy’s goalkeeper Matilde Robbioni. Italy broke the deadlock just before halftime through Anna Copelli.

In the second half, Nigeria’s apparent equalizer was ruled out after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review showed a foul on Italy’s goalkeeper. Italy then scored three more goals, including a stunning long-range strike by Caterina Venturelli and a free-kick by Giulia Robino. A fourth goal by Rachelle Giudici was confirmed by VAR late in the game.

Despite spirited efforts, Nigeria’s team interest ended in this loss. The Flamingos now turn their focus to preparing for next year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, which will become an annual event.
