NIGERIA’S DEFENCE HQ REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO GENDER EQUALITY IN SECURITY

At the UK-supported Gender Symposium in Abuja, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) promised to push harder for gender equality and inclusivity in the security sector. The event marked the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, highlighting how gender-sensitive security practices strengthen peace and trust.

AVM Olusola Akinboyewa, DHQ’s Director of Civil–Military Relations, emphasized that gender mainstreaming is not just a box to tick but a strategic move that boosts mission success and fosters public confidence. The UK’s Deputy High Commissioner, Mrs Gill Lever, stressed the importance of empowering women as leaders and peacebuilders for stronger communities.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, lauded Nigeria’s progress since 2013 in building women’s capacity and protecting them in conflict zones. UN Women’s Beatrice Eyong praised the Armed Forces for exceeding UN benchmarks in female peacekeepers. Dr Joseph Ochogwu of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution echoed the vital role of inclusion in enduring peace.

This symposium united policymakers, security officials, and partners to forge paths for more gender-aware security operations in Nigeria.
