NIGERIAN MEDIA URGED TO UPHOLD ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM TO SHAPE NATIONAL VALUES

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) have called on journalists to embrace the highest standards of ethics and professionalism to positively project Nigeria’s core values and image. This appeal was made during the inaugural Press Week hosted by the NAN-NUJ Chapel in Abuja, themed “The Place of the Media in Shaping and Sustaining National Value.”

Dr. Ike Neliaku, NIPR President, stressed the media’s powerful role in not just telling stories but shaping attitudes and behaviors, reminding that the media is today the main guardian of national reputation and values. He highlighted the importance of fostering a collective national identity based on equity, justice, fairness, and inclusion values that can transform Nigeria into one of the greatest nations.

NUJ FCT Chairman Grace Ike urged media practitioners to move beyond sensationalism and uphold integrity, fairness, and responsible reporting to strengthen national unity and development. She emphasized the media’s critical duty to hold leaders accountable while also amplifying the voices of the marginalized and celebrating stories of hope.

Collins Yakubu-Hammer, NUJ NAN Chairman, described the media as a mirror and builder of society’s identity, urging journalists to combat misinformation by adhering to accuracy and transparency. He viewed the Press Week as a vital opportunity for journalists to recommit to ethical journalism that promotes public good and reinforces the moral fabric of Nigeria.
