Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, told CNN on Tuesday that the country stands firmly for religious freedom, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. He dismissed foreign claims that terrorists in Nigeria only target Christians, calling such narratives misleading and harmful.
According to Idris, attacks affect both Christians and Muslims, especially in northern Nigeria, and false portrayals risk sowing dangerous divisions in the country. He emphasized that Nigeria is a highly tolerant nation where freedom of religion is constitutionally protected.
Idris acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, including terrorism and insurgency, but highlighted the federal government’s strong initiatives to restore safety and stability across the country. Recent reforms, military upgrades, and strategic leadership changes show Nigeria’s resolve to create a safe environment for all citizens under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Promoting false narratives divides us. The criminals want to paint Nigeria as a place of religious conflict, but Nigeria is safe and committed to protecting everyone’s rights,” he said.
