The Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled the hearing of the suit filed by the police against human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and other conveners of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest to November 5.
The delay was due to the absence of the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Umar, who was attending to matters at the court’s Enugu division. Originally, the case was set for Wednesday and was the 11th on the court’s cause list.
Justice Umar had earlier placed an interim order restraining Sowore and others from protesting in sensitive Abuja areas, including Aso Rock Villa and the National Assembly, pending a full hearing.
The hearing was stalled partly because of the protest held on October 20, which significantly disrupted court proceedings.
The police brought the ex-parte motion against Sowore, Sahara Reporters Ltd, the Take It Back Movement, and other associated groups and individuals, citing concerns that the protest might threaten national security.
Sowore, who is also the 2019 and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (ACC), had organized the protest calling for the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
