COURT ORDERS PERMANENT FORFEITURE OF $49,700 FROM FORMER INEC OFFICIAL DR. NURA ALI

The Federal High Court in Abuja has permanently forfeited $49,700 recovered from Dr. Nura Ali, former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC for Sokoto State during the 2023 general elections. The ruling was delivered by Justice Emeka Nwite following a motion by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The ICPC had temporarily seized the money during a search of Dr. Ali’s residence after allegations emerged that the funds were bribe money linked to electoral manipulation. Despite public notices inviting claimants to contest the forfeiture, no interested party came forward.

Justice Nwite ruled the motion meritorious and granted the permanent forfeiture. The case stemmed from claims that Ali accepted the money from politicians, violating laws on corruption and electoral integrity. The court also ordered continued investigation into Ali’s actions.

This decision highlights Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to tackling corruption in electoral processes and upholding rule of law.
