The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has taken a major step in curbing crime by dismantling an illegal firearms fabrication factory in Itam Village, Itu Local Government Area. Police operatives, acting on credible intelligence, raided the facility on October 24, arresting two suspects: 39-year-old Aniekan Aniedi and 35-year-old Ubong Udofia, believed to be his accomplice.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John revealed that the suspects were producing locally made firearms supplied to armed robbers and cultists in the region. Items recovered include three fabricated guns, metal pipes, iron rods, copper wires, and materials used for gun butts, alongside welding and electric filing machines.
The police commissioner, Mohammad Azare, hailed the raid as a significant blow to the arms supply fueling violence in the state and urged the public to provide credible tips on suspicious activities while assuring confidentiality.
Investigations are ongoing to expose the wider network and linkages to other crimes. The suspects will be charged to court after the probe.
