At least four migrants have tragically died after their boat capsized near the Greek island of Lesbos, while seven others, reportedly Sudanese men, were rescued. The incident, according to Greek coastguard and public broadcaster ERT, remains under active search for any further missing persons.
Strong winds sweeping the region likely contributed to the accident and hampered rescue efforts, which involved multiple coastguard vessels, a helicopter, and land search teams. Details about the total number of passengers remain unclear.
This comes as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports over 30,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean to Greece this year, with many risking perilous journeys from Turkey’s western coast or Libya in search of safety and a better life.
