SHEIKH AHMAD GUMI URGES ISLAMIC JUDGES TO GRANT ABUSED WOMEN DIVORCE WITHOUT COMPENSATION

Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on Islamic judges and clerics to ensure women enduring domestic abuse are given the right to divorce their husbands without being forced to pay compensation. Speaking at his weekly Tafsir session at Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna, Gumi emphasized that Islam condemns oppression in marriage and grants both spouses the right to end a union when respect and compassion vanish.

Highlighting the double standards where men dissolve marriages easily but women face financial hurdles, he stressed this is unjust and against Islamic principles. Drawing from Al-Mukhtasar Al-Khalil and Qur’anic verses (Q4:35, Q4:19, Q4:130), Gumi underscored that separation is allowed when harmony is lost and both parties deserve justice.

He criticized husbands who abuse wives yet demand compensation to grant divorce, saying judges must dissolve such marriages promptly to free victims from misery. Gumi urged courageous and fair rulings to protect women and ensure they do not buy their freedom from oppressors, reminding that Allah promises to enrich both parties after separation.

Gumi’s message champions kindness, mercy, and mutual respect as pillars of healthy marriage and the right to walk away with dignity when these fail.
