The Abuja High Court presided by Justice Chizoba Oji on Monday adjourned the hearing of the preliminary objection filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan challenging the powers of the Attorney-General of the Federation to prosecute her. The senator faces a three-count charge of criminal defamation concerning alleged harmful imputations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
Prosecution counsel David Kaswe informed the court that although the prosecution’s response to the objection was filed, it had not been properly served to the defense due to incorrect address details. He requested a short adjournment for proper service, which the defense counsel, Ehighioge West-Idahosa SAN, confirmed and indicated they had more evidence to submit upon proper notification.
The defense also sought a longer adjournment to accommodate attendance at the International Bar Association meeting in Canada. After hearing both sides, the court fixed December 1, 2025, for the hearing of the preliminary objection.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has pleaded not guilty and contends the objection challenges the validity of the prosecution’s charges, alleging abuse of prosecutorial powers.
