LAGOS POLICE WARN SOWORE TO STAY AWAY FROM DEMOLITION PROTESTS OR FACE LEGAL ACTION

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has issued a stern warning to activist Omoyele Sowore and others against mobilising protests over recent demolitions in Lagos. Speaking at the heavily guarded Iyana-Oworo axis of the Third Mainland Bridge, Jimoh revealed that massive police deployments have been made across key areas to prevent any public disorder.

Jimoh stressed that no attempts to block highways or disrupt peace would be tolerated, highlighting the importance of the Third Mainland Bridge as a lifeline for thousands relying on it daily. Police officers are strategically stationed at locations including Maryland, Ojota, Gani Fawehinmi Park, Gbagada, and Lekki Toll Gate.

While affirming constitutional rights to peaceful protests, the police chief emphasized that due process must be followed and that recent actions labeled as protest are attempts to disrupt peace, which will be met with legal consequences.

Defending the demolitions, Jimoh described affected sites as illegal and used by criminals, assuring that genuine residents have been compensated. He warned against exploiting the situation for political or criminal purposes, vowing that law enforcement will act strongly against anyone inciting chaos under the guise of activism.

He reassured the public of their right to safety and freedom of movement, pledging to maintain peace but cracking down firmly on criminality disguised as protest.
