FARMERS IN NASARAWA, NIGER, AND KOGI SOUND ALARM OVER PLUMMETING FOOD PRICES DESPITE BUMPER HARVESTS

Farmers in Nasarawa, Niger, and Kogi states are facing tough times due to falling prices for major food commodities despite bumper harvests this season. Maize prices dropped from about ₦70,000 in 2024 to ₦30,000-₦35,000 per 100kg, and rice prices fell from ₦150,000 to ₦120,000. High costs for fertilisers and other inputs, combined with insecurity and flooding, have led to heavy losses for many farmers.

Farmers like Mr. Sunday Bulus and Mr. Haruna Ali lament the struggle to recover investments amid plummeting prices. Calls have been made for government intervention to reduce input costs, stabilize prices, and address security challenges. Experts advise proper storage techniques to minimize post-harvest losses and caution against unsafe chemical use.

In Niger, flooding and banditry have hindered farm access, worsening conditions, while Kogi farmers highlight erratic weather and market flooding as major issues. They urge adoption of climate-smart farming, improved irrigation, credit access, and rural infrastructure to bolster productivity and profitability.
