Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, appointed as the 25th Chief of Naval Staff, brings over three decades of impressive naval expertise and leadership to Nigeria’s maritime forces. Born on September 20, 1969, in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Abbas has dedicated his career to safeguarding Nigeria’s waters with discipline and strategic foresight.
A chemistry graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), he is a seasoned Above Water Warfare specialist. His extensive training includes courses at the prestigious NNS QUORRA, Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, the United Nations Military Observer Course in Tanzania, and graduation from the National Defence College, Abuja.
Abbas has held key roles such as Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, Commander of Task Group Operation TSARE TEKU, and Chief of Naval Safety and Standards. His decorated service has earned him numerous honors including the Forces Service Star and Distinguished Service Star.
Known for calm composure and strategic leadership, he is expected to invigorate the Nigerian Navy’s mission to secure the nation’s maritime domain and support national security.
Outside his professional life, Abbas enjoys hockey and driving. He is married to Mrs. Aisha Abbas and they have two sons.
