The United Nations has praised Nigeria for rising to the challenge and taking active steps to implement the UN Secretary-General’s Action Agenda on internal displacement. Speaking after a joint high-level mission, UN officials highlighted Nigeria’s shift from short-term humanitarian aid to promoting self-reliance and durable recovery for over 3.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).
UNHCR’s Raouf Mazou pointed out Nigeria’s unique approach of pairing public investment with private sector engagement, while UNDP’s Shoko Noda identified Nigeria as a potential model for other countries facing displacement challenges. The mission urged international partners to sustain and scale up support, especially amid declining humanitarian funding.
Significant progress includes enhanced data and policy coordination, with state governments integrating durable solutions into development plans. The government and UN agencies are working closely to empower displacement-affected communities towards economic recovery and resilience.
