SULTAN OF SOKOTO URGES NIGERIANS TO PROTECT WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND END GBV

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to stand firm in protecting the rights of women and girls. Speaking at a high-level town hall meeting in Sokoto focused on peace and security through women’s inclusion and access to justice, he stressed that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a serious human rights violation that demands united action.

Represented by the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar, the Sultan highlighted that women are the foundation of society—as mothers, wives, and daughters—and safeguarding their rights is non-negotiable. He praised Sokoto’s government for increasing women’s participation in decision-making and urged continued efforts to build a peaceful future.

Global Rights Executive Director Mrs Abiodun Baiyewu echoed the concern over security challenges in the North-West but praised women’s resilience and leadership despite facing violence. She called for changing societal attitudes to see women as key agents of peace and justice. Other speakers, including UK Integrated Security Fund’s Cliff Gai and Bishop Dr. Matthew Kukah, emphasized community involvement and respect for institutions as essential to lasting peace.

The event was a strong push for inclusion, equity, and justice, reflecting a shared commitment to protect human rights and strengthen security across Sokoto and Nigeria.
