The National Economic Council (NEC) has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) to strengthen security around all creeks in the Niger Delta to curb oil theft. Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo, chairing the NEC Ad-hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft Prevention, shared this after the council meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Uzodinma highlighted significant progress in reducing oil theft, with crude production rising to over 1.7 million barrels per day due to coordinated efforts by NNPCL, the Navy, security agencies, and state governments. The committee’s mandate now includes tackling illegal mining and theft of solid minerals nationwide, aiming to safeguard all national resources.
The governor praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to economic stability and security, affirming the governors’ support for the Renewed Hope Agenda. The NEC endorsed a six-point reform framework focused on economic stability, infrastructure collaboration via the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund, enhanced security funding, and regular progress briefings to sustain growth and development.
