Major labour unions in Kaduna State have suspended their planned strike after Governor Uba Sani approved the implementation of the new national minimum wage and pay adjustments for local government workers. The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), The unions-Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN)—praised the governor’s move as a bold show of fairness and respect for workers’ rights.
At a joint briefing in Kaduna, union leaders highlighted that the wage increase also benefits workers under the State Universal Education and Primary Healthcare Boards starting October 2025. They applauded the state’s strides in improving education and healthcare, including classroom renovations, new retirement policies for teachers, and enhanced welfare schemes like ENDWELL. The health sector reforms, such as revitalizing 255 Primary Healthcare Centres and recruiting 1,800 health workers yearly, were also celebrated.
The unions further welcomed the launch of 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses providing free rides for workers and students, easing transport costs amid fuel subsidy changes. They reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful cooperation, urging members to show dedication and professionalism as Kaduna strengthens government-labour ties under Sani’s leadership.
