FCCPC WARNS AGAINST DANGEROUS FOOD ADULTERATION AMID DEADLY HEALTH RISKS

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has raised the alarm over widespread food adulteration by vendors seeking quick profits, posing serious health hazards to Nigerians. Toxic chemicals like calcium carbide, bromate, sudan red colorant, sniper, and formalin have been illicitly used in food processing, threatening public safety.

Calcium carbide, commonly misused as a ripening agent, contains harmful arsenic and phosphorus, potentially causing serious neurological damage. FCCPC’s Vice Chairman, Olatunji Bello, stressed that access to safe, unadulterated food is a fundamental right, urging food industry players to maintain hygiene, proper labeling, and ethical business practices. The commission warns that violators prioritizing profit over public safety will face harsh penalties.
