Former and active female soldiers in Australia have launched a groundbreaking class action lawsuit alleging widespread sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination within the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The case, which began in Federal Court in Sydney, is expected to bring thousands of affected women together in a fight against decades of systematic abuse and cover-ups.
Leading law firm JGA Saddler is coordinating the lawsuit, which covers anyone who served between November 2003 and May 2025. The plaintiffs, whose identities are protected, describe a toxic workplace culture where sexual violence and discrimination thrive, overshadowing even the threat of war.
Lawyer Joshua Aylward highlighted that these women face daily threats not from external enemies but within their ranks. Personal accounts include harrowing tales of harassment and assault, emphasizing a culture of silence and victim shaming.
The ADF acknowledges the problem and is developing strategies to eliminate sexual misconduct, affirming that all personnel deserve respect and a safe workplace.
