The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a strong advisory stating that Israel, as the occupying power in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), must uphold its responsibilities by allowing essential aid like food, water, medical supplies, and fuel to reach the population unhindered. The court also emphasized Israel’s duty to protect UN and humanitarian workers and cooperate fully with organizations like UNRWA and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
With a 10-1 majority, the ICJ stressed that Israel is bound by international law to safeguard civilians and respect the privileges of the United Nations, including the inviolability of UN premises. The ruling condemns any use of starvation as a warfare method. Israel has strongly rejected the advisory, calling it a political move against the country.
