YOUNG MECHANIC SENTENCED TO SIX MONTHS OR FINE FOR STEALING YOGURT IN JOS

An 18-year-old mechanic, Abdulmalik Hamza, has been sentenced to six months in prison by a Magistrates’ Court in Jos for stealing a pack of ‘Fresh Yo’ yogurt from a local shop. The court, presided over by Magistrate Irene Pati, gave Hamza an option to pay a N20,000 fine instead. Hamza pleaded guilty during the summary trial.

The case was reported by the Nasarawa Gwom Police Station surveillance team after Hamza was caught breaking into the shop on September 30. The offense falls under Section 282 of the Plateau Penal Code, which outlines theft-related crimes. The verdict highlights the court’s swift action in addressing even small-scale theft under the law.
