The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, has condemned the recent tanker explosion in Niger State that tragically killed 35 people as a preventable national disaster. In a statement, he blamed the accident on ignorance, greed, and blatant disregard for safety warnings, with fuel scooping identified as a leading cause of such deadly incidents.
Mohammed urged citizens and community leaders to take collective responsibility to end the dangerous practice of tampering with crashed tankers. He stressed that these reckless actions are tantamount to inviting death and directed FRSC teams nationwide to ramp up grassroots sensitisation on the risks. Traditional and religious leaders are also called to partner in promoting road safety awareness.
The explosion occurred after a tanker carrying petroleum lost control and overturned on the Bida-Lapai route. Residents rushing to scoop fuel triggered the blast, igniting a fire that claimed lives and left dozens injured. FRSC and Niger State Fire Service teams responded quickly to extinguish the fire and evacuate victims for medical care.
