LAGOS TO HOST 2026 AFRICA ROAD RUNNING RACE IN A HISTORIC FIRST FOR THE CONTINENT

Nigeria, through the National Sports Commission and Athletics Federation of Nigeria in partnership with World Athletics, is set to host the inaugural Africa Road Running Race in Lagos in February 2026. This landmark event marks a new chapter in African sports, focusing on road running as a cultural and economic driver rather than just professional athletic competition.

World Athletics’ Alexis Cisternino highlighted the race’s role in promoting running across Africa, backed by a two-day technical workshop to boost standards continent-wide. NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko linked the event to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing road racing’s booming popularity and the drive to develop training centers nationwide.

NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade and AFN Vice President Solomon Ogba praised this opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s leadership in sports, with Lagos poised to become a premier destination for global athletic events.
