The Kano State Government, under Governor Abba Yusuf, is doubling down on efforts to preserve the city’s historical treasures, many threatened by rapid urban growth and neglect. Speaking at a dinner for the World Heritage Volunteers Initiative, the governor described the program as pivotal in advancing Kano’s legacy onto the world stage.
Represented by Secretary to the State Government Umar Ibrahim, the administration pledged full support to heritage conservation efforts. Governor Yusuf lamented the loss of priceless cultural landmarks, including the old city halls, urging urgent action to restore and protect what remains. He emphasized the need to elevate Kano’s cultural heritage by safeguarding historic sites while making the legacy accessible for future generations.
The initiative, hosted by the African International Documentary Festival Foundation, aims to document and celebrate Kano’s iconic sites such as Gidan Sarki and Kurmi Market. Partners including federal agencies and cultural groups are working with local communities to boost cultural tourism and global recognition. Observers applaud Kano’s unique historical contributions, highlighting its role as a beacon of Africa’s cultural pride and resilience.
