A 22-year-old mechanic, Isa Mustapha, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison by a Magistrate’s Court in Jos for stealing a car battery. Magistrate Irene Pati, who presided over the case, gave Mustapha an option to pay an N80,000 fine or spend a year in jail. Additionally, he must pay N70,000 in compensation or face two more months in prison.
The court heard that Mustapha and his accomplice, who is still at large, stole a car battery valued at N52,000. The case was reported by the vehicle owner, Mashood Bashir, on September 2 at the “C” Division Police Station. The sentence aims to serve as a deterrent against theft and uphold justice under the Plateau Penal Code Law.
Despite the summary trial, the court’s firm stance demonstrates the judiciary’s commitment to addressing property crimes swiftly. The ruling reflects ongoing efforts within Plateau State to protect citizens’ rights and maintain social order.
